About Our Closures
Most of the families we serve are working families who need care they can count on, so we keep our closures to a minimum. Apart from the days listed below, Rock Spring is open full-day, year-round.
Days the School Is Closed
We close on Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday following it, Winter Break (generally from Christmas Eve to just after New Year’s Day, depending on how the days fall), Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day. Columbus Day and Presidents’ Day also serve as staff training days.
We are additionally closed for one Friday in late August, before Montgomery County Public Schools opens, so that our teachers can prepare their classrooms for the new school year. The exact date shifts with the MCPS calendar; in 2026 it was Friday, August 21.
Occasionally we may need to close, or close early, for additional staff training. When that happens we announce it several weeks in advance.
Inclement Weather
We know how much an unexpected closing disrupts a working family, and many of our teachers travel farther to reach us than our families do. To keep our decisions predictable, we follow Montgomery County:
- If the federal government, MCPS administrative offices, or Montgomery County Government is closed, Rock Spring is closed.
- If any of those open late, we open late as well, typically at 10:00 am.
- If MCPS is closed but administrative offices are open, we generally open at least two hours late, at 9:00 am.
- If MCPS opens two hours late, we generally open at least one hour late, at 8:00 am.
When weather develops during the day we may announce an early closing, and we give families enough notice to reach us. Before you leave home, check this website, your email, or call the office and listen to the inclement weather message.
Full closure and weather policies are in the Parent Handbook. If you have a question about a specific date, please contact the office.
